Totalizers are precipitation gauges which are designed for precipitation measurement in remote
areas, e.g. in high mountain regions. They often feature a wind protection ring to minimize
measurement errors due to wind. An oil layer consisting of Vaseline protects against evaporation
and the addition of calcium chloride inhibits freezing of the collected water. Totalizers
mostly are read half-yearly or yearly.
Meteodat GmbH operates its own totalizer network in the Wägital catchment and in the Limmern
area. Furthermore, since more than 20 years Meteodat GmbH produces the official reports of the
totalizer network of MeteoSwiss.
